A Windows Service Pack is a collection of security, updates, fixes and enchantments for your operating system. It is important that all users registering a Windows computer on our network has their operating system updated. Computers that are not updated with the most recent Windows Service Packs not only pose a security risk for the user, but also for every other user on our network. We like to create a safe and secure computing network for our users and keeping all the computers updated with the most recent Windows Updates is a simple and easy way to help with this.

On the first floor of the Library, room 102 and 106 are now home to Hector and Helen. Both rooms have a 32″ flat screen monitor, a Mac mini, two keyboards, and two mice that can be used for Group Projects. There is also a connection for a laptop so it can be connected to the 32″ monitor and both keyboards and mice. Hector currently has an added bonus. There is an iSight camera connected to the Mac mini that allows users to create short clips using iMovie or even try out some video conferencing.

The two keyboards and mice allow groups to work on a project together without the annoyance of swapping around keyboards and mice when different people want to add something to the project. The flexible workspace is perfect for groups writing collaborative papers, creating Powerpoint for group presentations, or working on other computing projects.

There is a calendar on the door that groups may use to sign up to reserve Hector for up to three hours at a time. More on the signup policy can be found here.

For more information visit the Library Blog article.

If you happen to buy a PC computer after today, you will have Microsoft Windows Vista instead of Windows XP pre-loaded on your computer.

What does this mean for Gustavus users? You will still need Symantec Antivirus on your computer. You can download this from our registration website , but you will need to look for Symantec Antivirus for Windows Vista. It is recommended that you uninstall any antivirus products, before installing our Symantec Antivirus.

For more information about Windows Vista, please visit Wikipedia’s article on Windows Vista or Microsoft’s Windows Home Page.

SigmaPlot 10 is the newest version of the graphing software from SYSSTAT. It is used for several classes at Gustavus. It is currently installed on all of the public computer labs, kiosks, Multi-Media machines and some faculty computers.

Gustavus currently has a Network License that allows ten concurrent users to use the application. This means the application can be installed on many machines, but it can only be running on ten at a time. Every time a user opens SigmaPlot, the application checks with Phoebe (our application server) to see if there are any Licenses available. There are two possible scenarios that could then occur:

Scenario 1: Nine or less users have SigmaPlot open.

SigmaPlot application will open for the user.

Scenario 2: Ten users have SigmaPlot open.

All of the licenses that Gustavus owns are currently being used. A message will be returned to every user who attempts to open the application saying “No License Found.” The user will be able to click OK on this message and SigmaPlot will attempt to open the trial version. This attempt will fail because the trial version has expired and will then close SigmaPlot, because there is no license available for the user. The user must wait until one of the ten users who have SigmaPlot open close the application.
