			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Gustavus Technology Services would like to remind everybody that <strong>backing up data</strong> and <strong>saving frequently</strong> is more important than ever.<strong><br />
</strong></p>
<p>Great ways to back up your data:</p>
<ul>
<li>Flash Drive</li>
<li><a title="http://www.gustavus.edu/gts/Home_directory" href="http://www.gustavus.edu/gts/Home_directory">Home Directory</a></li>
<li>Emailing it to a second email address such as GMail, Yahoo! Mail, etc (for backup purposes only)</li>
<li>External Hard Drive</li>
<li>If you own a Mac, Time Machine is a great option</li>
<li>Creating incremental backups using any of the mediums mentioned. (just in case your document is corrupted)</li>
</ul>
<p>Bad ways to back up your data:</p>
<ul>
<li>Old 3.5 floppy disks (small storage size and prone to failure)</li>
<li>Just emailing it to yourself and using that as your only copy. However, you can email it to yourself and then work on it, but make sure you save as a new file to your Home Directory. <strong><em>If you just open it and save it, straight from your email, it will save it in the Temporary Internet Files, and once the lab computer is restarted, it will be gone. </em></strong><strong>When saving documents, make sure you check the location of where you are saving the document. (home directory, flash drive, etc) Always double check your save location.</strong></li>
</ul>
<p>If you think you may have lost your document or it has become corrupted AND you had saved it on your Home Directory, please stop by the Technology Helpline. We may be able to recover at least some of it. Always have your important paper on at least two different mediums. If your hard drive dies, you&#8217;ll be glad you saved it on your flash drive as well. <strong></strong></p>

Yay! After using the release candidate for some time now, I can tell you that it is very nice.</p>
<p>We just wanted to remind everybody of a post we had written in September regarding student pricing. As a student, you can purchase a copy, through the website provided in that post, at a discounted price. This offer ends January 3rd, 2010.</p>

<p>Windows 7 computers will be able to access our network through our normal registration process. Before registering, you will need to uninstall any pre-loaded antivirus, and install the Symantec Endpoint Protection that is provided our <a href="https://greg.gac.edu/download/" target="_blank">downloads page</a>. Be careful to note if you are using the 32-bit version or the 64-bit version.</p>
<p>Something I have found to be really useful in Windows 7 is the &#8220;Record steps to reproduce a problem&#8221; tool.<br />

<p>It will take a screen shot of your computer screen every step you take as long as you want. This would come in handy for showing your friend how to install a program or how to install a printer, etc. It would also help  you if you have a problem with your computer, and you would want to show the Technology Helpline exactly the steps you are doing that causes a problem or gives you an error message. In some cases, we would be able to better diagnose what exactly could be causing the problem by seeing those steps.</p>
<p>If you are a faculty or staff member, you won&#8217;t likely see it on your office computer until Summer 2010 or 2011, if you have been approved for a new computer. Students stay tuned for more information regarding Windows 7 on select lab computers sometime in the future.</p>

<p><strong>To prepare:</strong></p>
<ol>

<li>Login with your Gustavus username and password.</li>
<li>Click on Alternate e-mail.</li>
<li>Enter an alternate e-mail address that you check regularly.</li>
<li>Click Submit.</li>

Please bring photo ID such as your Gustavus 3 Crowns card if stopping by the Technology Helpline.<br />
