How about trying the new dual-boot (Mac OSX and Windows XP) computer lab? You can choose Windows or OSX! It is located within the Olin computer lab, behind the glass windows – in the back.

This mini lab (9 computers) is open to all students, everyday, all day. The only time that this computer lab is unavailable to students is when there is a training course being taught, and usually there will be signs to make you aware of any upcoming events.

If you are unable to secure a computer in the library during finals, please stop by and use this “unknown” lab.

Today, we have put the finishing touches on our first dual-boot computer lab. However, this indeed is a work in progress.

Our dual-boot classroom is located in the Olin Technology Center’s teaching computer lab. The lab consists of 9 Mac Mini’s that are running both Mac OSX Tiger and Windows XP. When you sit down at the computer, you are presented with two options: Mac OS X or Windows XP. All you need to do is click your desired operating system and voila! You will be taken to the login screen for either the Windows or OSX.

This teaching classroom was originally designed in summer of 2002 for a quiet, teaching space that could accommodate both Macs and PCs. With those older machines, we needed to have 2 computers (1 Mac, 1 PC) for each station, in a different room in order to reduce noise and heat. Although there were many advantages, there were drawbacks with that setup. If a computer froze or you needed to insert a CD/DVD or use a USB drive, you would be unable to since the computers were behind locked doors. Also, to have 18 computers turned on, all day, with older technology, was an energy waste.

Future plans include upgrading both operating systems to OSX Leopard and Windows Vista. There may even be a triple-option in the future adding a flavor of linux to the mix.

Stop by and give it a test drive. We would love to hear your feedback.

On the first floor of the Library, room 102 and 106 are now home to Hector and Helen. Both rooms have a 32″ flat screen monitor, a Mac mini, two keyboards, and two mice that can be used for Group Projects. There is also a connection for a laptop so it can be connected to the 32″ monitor and both keyboards and mice. Hector currently has an added bonus. There is an iSight camera connected to the Mac mini that allows users to create short clips using iMovie or even try out some video conferencing.

The two keyboards and mice allow groups to work on a project together without the annoyance of swapping around keyboards and mice when different people want to add something to the project. The flexible workspace is perfect for groups writing collaborative papers, creating Powerpoint for group presentations, or working on other computing projects.

There is a calendar on the door that groups may use to sign up to reserve Hector for up to three hours at a time. More on the signup policy can be found here.

For more information visit the Library Blog article.
