As the summer draws to a close and Gusties start thinking of their return to campus, we wanted to pass along some technology information and updates. If you have any questions or concerns regarding this information or any other technology needs, please contact the Technology Helpline at helpline@gustavus.edu or 507-933-6111.

Printing on Campus
To address the growing cost of paper, ink and printers on campus, and to encourage thoughtful choices of when to print, the College is expanding its use of the print accounting system this fall. Students will be allowed 600 units (single sided black and white) of printing per academic year at no charge. Charges for any printing that exceeds the 600-unit maximum will be five cents per unit, and billed to the student’s account. Unused printing allotments will not carry over to subsequent years. For more detailed information regarding the printing policy, please see https://gustavus.edu/gts/Printing.

Residence Hall Labs
To better serve the needs of the students using the residence hall computer labs, some of the labs have been reconfigured to include spaces more conducive for group study, kiosks for quick access, and laptop stations. If you have suggestions or feedback regarding these changes or suggestions for changes in the residence hall computer labs, please email helpline@gustavus.edu.

Symantec Endpoint Protection
All personally-owned Windows computers registering on the campus network this fall will be required to update to the newest version of Symantec Endpoint Protection. The newest version brings added security features and increased protection from viruses and spyware.

Guest Access/Wireless/Network
Improvements and segmenting have taken place with the wireless and wired networks on campus this summer. These changes, mostly invisible to the end users, should deliver faster and more reliable Internet access to all. Guests of the college should access the GustieGuest wireless network. Students in the residence halls are reminded that a wired connection is always faster and more reliable than wireless. If you need an Ethernet cable – stop by the Technology Helpline and pick one up for free.

Home Directory Space
Network storage space has increased over the summer allowing all users more space.

Helpline in the Library
The Technology Helpline is planning on opening a satellite desk in the Library during the evening to help you with any technology issues or problems. Look for us in the Library.

GusTV
Tired of paying for cable? Check out GusTV. GusTv is an IPTV pilot project that allows users to access basic cable channels via their wired Internet connection. For more information, please see https://gustavus.edu/gts/GusTv.

Helpline Twitter
Are you using Twitter to stay connected and up to date with your friends? Add the Technology Helpline to your Twitter feed.

If you have any other questions or concerns, please contact the Technology Helpline.

On the first floor of the Library, room 102 and 106 are now home to Hector and Helen. Both rooms have a 32″ flat screen monitor, a Mac mini, two keyboards, and two mice that can be used for Group Projects. There is also a connection for a laptop so it can be connected to the 32″ monitor and both keyboards and mice. Hector currently has an added bonus. There is an iSight camera connected to the Mac mini that allows users to create short clips using iMovie or even try out some video conferencing.

The two keyboards and mice allow groups to work on a project together without the annoyance of swapping around keyboards and mice when different people want to add something to the project. The flexible workspace is perfect for groups writing collaborative papers, creating Powerpoint for group presentations, or working on other computing projects.

There is a calendar on the door that groups may use to sign up to reserve Hector for up to three hours at a time. More on the signup policy can be found here.

For more information visit the Library Blog article.
